EVs are key to truly climate-neutral mobility. This is Polestar’s plan to eliminate emissions.

EVs are key to truly climate-neutral mobility. This is Polestar’s plan to eliminate emissions.

We have a goal of reaching climate neutrality by 2040.

Becoming truly climate-neutral means eliminating all greenhouse gas emissions across our operations, and all phases of our cars’ life cycles. This includes emissions from supply chain and manufacturing, as well as energy use during the car’s use phase.

Polestar is focused on three ambitious climate-neutrality goals.

  • 01.
    Creating a truly climate-neutral car by 2030

  • 02.
Halving per-vehicle-sold greenhouse gas emissions by 2030

  • 03.
Becoming climate-neutral across our value chain by 2040

Via breakthroughs in research and design, we aim to create Polestar’s first truly climate-neutral vehicle by 2030. We can only get there by eliminating all supply chain, manufacturing and end-of-life emissions (without using offsetting methods like tree-planting), and we’re focused on challenging ourselves, and going beyond our industry, to showcase a new future for electric mobility and encourage innovation in the process.

More on the Polestar 0 project

Making the switch to renewable energy across our supply chains is a key strategic initiative for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We’re selecting suppliers who prioritise the transition to a fully decarbonised supply chain, while also continuously improving circularity.

  • Collaborating to enable sustainable development

As members of the Exponential Roadmap Initiative, Polestar is joining forces with dozens of other progressive companies to work towards halving emissions by 2030, as outlined in the Paris Agreement. Fulfilling this commitment will be crucial to holding off some of the worst impacts of climate change, and limit irreversible damage to societies, economies and the planet.

  • The drive for sustainable charging

Polestar is continuously working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the cradle-to-gate phases of our cars’ life cycles, including materials production, battery modules, and manufacturing processes.

After a car leaves the factory, its overall carbon footprint remains variable. Drivers can make a significant difference to their Polestar’s carbon footprint by charging with renewable energy sources such as solar or wind. We’re engaging in partnerships to increase the availability of sustainable charging options, while also aiming to decrease use-phase energy-consumption-per-kilometre of future Polestar models.

It’s our intention that, by 2040, every Polestar produced will be fully climate neutral, following the example set by the Polestar 0 project. We’ve drawn up a roadmap to lay out our strategic initiatives for getting there, working toward tangible targets for the two-decade period between now and then.

Although emissions per vehicle are decreasing year-on-year, absolute emissions across our value chain in 2022 increased by 67 percent over 2021. This increase is related to Polestar’s growth, increased sales and greater market presence. While growth therefore brings it own unique set of challenges, it gives us more power to drive change within the automotive industry.

The 2040 goal is based on absolute emissions, to which the main contributors are the components we use to produce our cars. Absolute emissions also increase as we sell more cars. To achieve carbon neutrality by 2040, our absolute emissions must start to decrease by the second half of this decade. We identify and track each department’s emissions within Polestar as a whole, and take steps to reduce them.
