Polestar 3 prototypes take on Hällered’s Proving Ground

Just under an hour east from Polestar HQ in Gothenburg, Sweden, lies Volvo’s testing facility, the Hällered Proving Ground. Recently, we invited media from some of our key markets to get a first-hand driving experience for the first time in Polestar 3 prototypes. And the results are in. Let’s delve into the key features that stood out on the various tracks.

Defying SUV norms, Polestar 3 prioritises reduced body roll and heightened road stability through its finely tuned suspension, structural stiffness, torque vectoring, and strategic battery-motor placement.

Beneath its exterior, Polestar 3 features a powerful dual-motor setup with up to 380 kW/517hp with smart electronic power management and torque distribution. This ensures instant power, balanced delivery, and optimal traction, adapting seamlessly to diverse road conditions.

A highlight is the torque vectoring dual clutch (TVDC) system, enhancing acceleration, cornering speeds, and traction on slippery terrains by redistributing power to the wheel with superior grip.

Polestar 3 employs dual chamber active air suspension, replacing conventional springs, offering enhanced handling and comfort. The system allows drivers to select various suspension modes through the centre display, and links to active dampers that can react to the road surface every two milliseconds.

Performance mode maximises power and acceleration, while range mode optimises energy efficiency, extending the range by disengaging the rear motor when it’s not needed.

In terms of stability, the Polestar 3 features a staggered wheel setup with wider wheels and 295 mm tyres at the rear, enhancing its handling characteristics even further. The 22” forged wheels, available with the Performance Pack, contribute to a lighter and stronger build.

Beyond technicalities, Polestar 3 showcased impressive body control and steering feel, navigating Hällered challenging terrains with ease, despite its weight.

Polestar 3's customised Pirelli rubber, torque-vectoring, and finely-tuned chassis contribute to a unique driving experience, tackling everything from demanding road surfaces to off-road obstacles with aplomb.

With a design harmonising aerodynamic efficiency with aesthetics, Polestar 3's drag coefficient is an impressive 0.29. The rear motor, equipped with the TVDC, actively combats understeer, ensuring the SUV adheres to the chosen line even in slippery conditions.
