Polestar Charge: the only charging app you'll need this summer

Planning an electric vehicle road trip no longer means juggling apps and charging cards. Polestar Charge with Plug & Charge delivers a seamless charging experience that keeps the focus on adventure.

Polestar Charge gives drivers access to more than one million public charge points across Europe, including over 22,000 Tesla Superchargers. Plug & Charge is a service that lets a vehicle authenticate and pay for a charging session automatically through the cable, with no app, card, or RFID tag required. Plug & Charge is available at more than 37,000 compatible stations across Europe and 3,000 in the UK. A Polestar Charge subscription takes things further, offering up to 30% off standard charging rates across a network of more than 88,000 fast chargers, including Ionity, Shell Recharge and Allego.

The Route Napoléon cuts south through the French Alps toward the Côte d'Azur: hairpins, elevation, and one of Europe's most demanding drives. It's the kind of route that should demand full attention. With Polestar Charge, charging en route asks for nothing more than a cable.

Pull in, plug in, walk away. No additional apps, no card, no authentication ritual. Just charge and continue. In an upgraded Polestar 3, the 800 V architecture means a 10–80% charge takes around 22 minutes at a DC fast charger. That’s roughly the time it takes to finish a coffee.

That's the logic behind Polestar Charge. A single, integrated charging service that removes the fragmentation that has long made public charging feel like a task rather than a pause.

One simplified system, a million charge points

Polestar has approached charging the same way it approaches the rest of ownership: by reducing complexity rather than layering onto it. Through a single ecosystem, accessible via the infotainment system or a standalone app, drivers can locate nearby chargers, plan routes around charging stops, and handle payment without switching networks, cards or payment methods.

"Instead of relying on multiple accounts and disconnected networks, drivers can access millions of public charging points through a single ecosystem," says Olivier Loedel, Head of Software Product Management at Polestar.

In Europe, that network spans more than one million public charge points, including over 22,000 Tesla Superchargers now fully integrated into the Polestar Charge app. Plug & Charge compatibility extends to more than 37,000 stations across Europe, with 3,000 in the UK alone.

What Plug & Charge actually does

The standout feature is deceptively simple. Plug & Charge enables the vehicle and charging station to communicate directly. The car authenticates itself, verifies access, and authorises payment in seconds, entirely without manual input. No phone, no card, no PIN.

The vehicle becomes both identity and wallet. On a long-distance drive, where there are so many other components to juggle (and things to misplace), that matters.

A Polestar Charge subscription takes things further, offering up to 30% off standard charging rates across a network of more than 88,000 fast chargers, including Ionity, Shell Recharge and Allego.

How Plug & Charge works:

•    No apps or RFID cards required
•    Automatic authentication via the charging cable
•    Automatic payment through your Polestar Charge account
•    Works across all supported public networks

Planning the perfect electric summer road trip

Polestar's Google-based navigation integrates charging into route planning from the outset, factoring in battery level, driving conditions, and destination to produce a coherent plan. Drivers retain full control over which stops to make, filtering by speed, price per kWh, or Plug & Charge compatibility.

But the more useful shift is perhaps psychological. Treated as part of the journey rather than an interruption to it, a charging stop at a well-positioned hub near Turin on a run from the Alps to Monaco is simply where lunch happens to be. And increasingly, the best charging hubs are worth stopping for in their own right. High-speed charging along major routes means meaningful range can be added in the time it takes to eat, stretch, or step away from the car.

Charging infrastructure across the UK and Europe is expanding quickly. In the UK ultra-rapid chargers of 150 kW or more have grown 40% since 2025, according to ZapMap data. The practical effect is that the spontaneous road trip, long the preserve of petrol, is becoming a straightforward proposition for EV drivers.

Tips for a better electric summer road trip:

•    Plan charging stops before you leave, but don't over-engineer it. The app adjusts as conditions change
•    Polestar Charge can filter chargers to display those with Plug & Charge compatibility
•    Prioritise ultra-rapid chargers on long legs to keep stops short
•    Align charging with natural breaks: meals, coffee, a walk
•    Let Plug & Charge handle authentication. No need to reach for your phone
